From setup to field verification: how commissioning changes with the CCI Configuration Wizard

The configuration and regulatory compliance of Plant Central Controllers (CCI) represent critical steps in the commissioning process of renewable energy plants. The requirements of the CEI 0-16 standard and the integration of communication logic towards DSOs (Distribution System Operators) demand the accurate parameterization of numerous factors: from managing Modbus communication channels with field devices to configuring the data required by Annex 11.

To reduce operational variability in the field and standardize setup procedures, Higeco More has integrated the new CCI Configuration Wizard on board its devices. The interface transforms the configuration into a guided, linear, and verifiable workflow at every single stage.

Software architecture and integration logic

The Configuration Wizard is designed to guide the technician step by step through the CCI configuration, providing a structured, fast, and error-free path.

From both an architectural and functional standpoint, the Wizard is designed to ensure stability, lightweight performance, and operational efficiency:

  • Integrated execution and automatic landing page: the Wizard is enabled as the primary interface upon the CCI’s first startup. The operator accesses the configuration procedure directly via a browser, eliminating the need to install dedicated software or tools on their computer.
  • Automatic cleanup upon completion: once configuration is complete, the Wizard automatically removes itself from the system to free up memory and ensure maximum operational stability of the device.
  • Flexible session management: the procedure can be paused and resumed at any time. The entered data remains stored on the device, allowing the setup to be completed in subsequent phases or by different users.
  • Management of plants of any size: The system architecture manages configurations without plant sizing constraints, ensuring operational fluidity and stability even in the presence of a high number of field devices.

The operational structure of the Configuration Wizard

The interface divides the configuration into two main sections, broken down into guided sub-steps.

1. General data

The first main section manages system settings and device connectivity through 4 steps:

  1. General data: setting of device identification parameters, including name, date, time, and GPS coordinates.
  2. Network configuration: setup of the local network and network interfaces.
  3. Server: definition of addressing and communication parameters towards the reference servers.
  4. Plant data: entry of the general plant specifications, POD code, nominal grid voltage, and information required by Annex 11.

2. Peripheral configuration

The second main section covers the mapping and parameterization of communication channels and field devices via Modbus, broken down into 8 steps:

  1. PdC Meter: automatic generation of the Point of Delivery meter.
  2. Additional meters: configuration of any auxiliary plant meters.
  3. Protection relays: configuration of the grid interface protection.
  4. Gateways & smart loggers: association of data concentrators and third-party monitoring devices.
  5. Generators: mapping of inverters and photovoltaic generation units.
  6. Loads: entry and categorization of plant power consumption (available from December).
  7. Sensors: integration of environmental sensors (irradiance, temperature, and wind).
  8. Applying the configuration: writing parameters to memory, automatic configuration of control plugins (PID and Governor), and execution of the real-time communication test with field peripherals.

Operational planning: when to use the Configuration Wizard

The Configuration Wizard was designed to natively and intuitively manage the complete setup of standard photovoltaic plants, automatically generating and parameterizing the PID (P and Q) and Governor plugins.

  • To ensure data is saved correctly, it is essential to configure all peripherals and regulation settings directly within the guided procedure, avoiding “mixed” or manual configurations that could risk being overwritten during the final save.

For plants with more complex architectures or special logic—such as EMS profiles, feed-in limitations, or hybrid multi-technology systems—the Wizard provides an ideal foundation: it enables operators to quickly model the plant structure and field devices, leaving only the parameterization of specific controls to the system’s advanced screens.
